basic info

Name: Gilbert Nightray
Age: 25
Canon: Pandora Hearts
History: link from the Pandora Hearts wiki

personality

Strengths: Gilbert Nightray is generally polite and well-mannered. As a servant, he's highly capable and uses his skills to fuss over and take care of others. It's the way he's always lived, and that's how he's most comfortable. From a young age he protected his brother and now he serves a young master he cares deeply about. He's extremely loyal; his loyalties being unwavering even after events he considers to be like betrayal to him. Earning his loyalty can be difficult at first but as he gets to know people and care about them as individuals, so too do his desires to protect and take care of those people.

He's a very self-sufficient person; requiring and wanting very little for himself. He knows how to cook, clean and has supported himself financially outside of the wealthy family he was adopted into for a long time. He's happier giving than receiving, a trait that suits his position as a servant to the Vessalius house.

Gilbert was also trained with a weapon-- a gun, to be precise. He learned quickly and was far better than his brother at picking up the skill; something that Vincent mentions is common for Gilbert. With half of the effort of most, he learns what he needs and excels without ever letting it go to his head. All in all he has a good heart that wants to see good people taken care of and succeed and if he can help them without neglecting the people he cares for most, then he will do what he can even if he is a bit socially awkward.

Flaws: Gilbert does have a habit of offering tough love to those he cares about, even willing to go so far as to smack some sense into them physically. He can get very loud and quite angry in an argument, especially on topics relating to people being self-value, being reckless or putting themselves or others in danger by their actions. There is a part of him that is cruel and manipulative-- using others to achieve his goals. He's killed as well, in order to protect his master and he isn't afraid to dirty his hands in whatever means are necessary to keep the people he cares about safe.

That said, due to certain fears he is also somewhat clingy and dependent on certain individuals. He clings to those he can be useful such as his brother or Oz. He's socially awkward, especially in large crowds and feels incredibly out of place among high-society despite being adopted into a wealthy and powerful family. He has a hard time relating to those types of people and prefers being treated as a servant-- the path he chose for himself as opposed to the family he joined simply because there was a possibility of obtaining it's Chain as well as reuniting with his brother.

As for what he's afraid of... his physical fear is of cats. He'll cry and panic at the sight of them. Can't deal with them at all. In his heart though he's also afraid of being abandoned. The idea that there might be a day that no one needs him is terrifying to him and for that reason he clings to the things he's able to do for people and what he's good for. He's also afraid of losing the people he cares about most. He's very dependent on others. Being separated from (physically or emotionally), much less losing them altogether is a fear he struggles with internally.

Miscellaneous: Things Gilbert likes includes cigarettes, being generally helpful to others, cooking/baking, and too a certain extent-- solitude. Or at least quiet, low-key gatherings. On the other hand he doesn't much care for parties or social expectations, liars, and again, for the most part-- women. Or more specifically mature women. Tomboys whom he doesn't really see as girlish he manages to do fine around but due to the fact that a lot of women tend to fawn over him for his dark and mysterious good looks, he's ill-equipped to respond to them and is overall uncomfortable around them.

game plans

Starting Faction: The Empress, to the East.
Goals: There are a lot of things I'm looking forward to-- not really anything I'd like to avoid at this point. I'd like to push Gilbert's personal boundaries regarding his comfort with women. I also have ideas of how I'd like to see him struggle with the idea of switching sides somewhere down the road for different reasons (especially with his stupid brother on the other side), although that's just kind of a vague idea at this point.

Losing his memories at an early age played a big part in his development. At first he was very withdrawn and timid, but became quickly attached to the people around him. He became very devoted to them, and in turn, very loyal. This plays a heavy part in his relationship with Oz, who becomes his master, and the person most important to him. He feels both sympathy and a great deal of admiration for the young boy whose father treats him so poorly and yet strived for so long to impress that same father. He sees Oz as someone who is both fragile and strong - someone he can admire, and is determined to protect at all costs.

Gilbert has rocky relationships with the rest of the characters one could call his friends. He tries to act cool around them, but tends to lose his cool easily. He fusses over them in an almost maternal way on a daily basis. At the same time, the closer he gets to people, the more he becomes prone to losing his temper when they do stupid or reckless things; especially when those stupid stunts could put them in danger. He’s not against scolding or yelling at his friends if he clearly feels they’re in the wrong.

A number of people tend to call him “useless” occasionally, and this comes from his more emotional or derpy side - the side of Gilbert that can get worked up over little things and runs away from cats, or yells at Alice for calling him ‘Seaweed head’. But those are under circumstances where he lets his guard down. Most of the time, Gilbert is not someone you should underestimate. He’s strong, fast, capable with a gun, and the type who can hold a grudge.

While his natural disposition is a good one - being someone who dislikes to needlessly hurt people physically or emotionally and generally being kind-natured, he is also capable of being rather cruel when the situation calls for it. If it’s important, he’s willing to use people to achieve different ends. He may always be considering the welfare of others, but if it’s between them and someone he cares about, he’s not unwilling to dirty his hands or use people in whatever fashion he can. If that means being deceitful, he can. If that means hurting them, he can - and this is another source of great guilt for him that surfaces from time to time. It’s never something he wants to have to do. In order to see all of his wishes answered, protect Oz, and reach certain ends, Gilbert allowed his hands to be dirtied and from that point on, he’s been willing to do whatever it takes. He chooses to dirty his hands for others and carry the weight of that guilt. Despite his guilt, he has a high tolerance for it and seems willing to continue to accept more and more guilt upon himself if he has to.

Socially, Gilbert tends to lean hard on the awkward side. It’s not easy for him to just talk to people he doesn’t know, and even worse when it’s a crowd he’s addressing. He’s also not very good at dealing with women at all. On a number of occasions it’s proven that a lot of women are attracted to him but he seems more afraid of them than anything. There are, of course, exceptions - primarily that he doesn’t seem to have as much difficulty dealing with girls that don’t act like ladies, such as Alice, who acts far much more like a tomboy. Another exception is Ada - a woman he grew up with and in turn one he is comfortable being around and cares about like a sister.

Gilbert looks, for all intents and purposes, like a very “cool” individual. Calm, collected… even ‘tall, dark, and handsome’ seem to describe him. At social events, people tend to be drawn to him despite his sometimes moody looks and anxiety towards large social gatherings. And to an extent, Gilbert is and tries to give off this impression of stoic strength. Beyond that image however, is a complex character who tries to be tough and remain very self-sufficient. He is an active character who hates to ask for things, and is far more comfortable taking care of others than asking for help himself.

A lot of that plays into the fact that Gilbert fears the idea that one day he may not be needed anymore. He fears that his friends - and more importantly, his master Oz - will leave him behind. For that reason and others, Gilbert tends to pile a lot of pressure on himself and push himself hard. He really asks a lot of himself that he wouldn’t dream of expecting from others. Sometimes he cares for others out of some form of feeling of obligation to the person. Sometimes he watches out for people because they are people Oz cares for. And other times it’s because of his own desire to look out for them. Whatever reason he’s acting on, he puts the same amount of effort into it.

He was forced to mature a lot as Oz’s servant - even more so after Oz’s disappearance. He became very single-minded, dedicated and focused after that; traits that have stuck with him ever since. When he sets his mind to something, he intends to make it happen.

When drunk, he tends to revert to a more childish state. In that state, it’s not difficult to get him crying and sometimes you don’t have to do anything at all - he sets himself off. And on all occasions he is deathly afraid of cats, and will be reduced to screaming, running and hiding at the sight. If he touches one, he will literally throw it off of him and shake for a good minute after. The reason for this fear is unknown. We only know that Oz likes to abuse it. Although in a short comic, he makes a comment to Vincent that Miss Ada scolded him once and he thought she was kinda cute when she did, exposing his more masochistic side as well.

Regaining his memories confused him a bit, but in the end - Gilbert chose to continue in his own way. The fact that he was a Baskerville didn’t change what was important to him. And while he may be a Baskerville, he doesn’t necessarily identify as one. What’s important to him hasn’t been changed by the fact that he knows where he came from.

That said - Gilbert is a Baskerville. He physically gets the benefits of being a Baskerville. But he does not side with them as his brother does, and remains on Oz’s side.

□ Name: Gilbert Nightray
□ Journal: [personal profile] loyaltydriven
□ Series: Pandora Hearts
□ Canon point: Chapter 59
□ History: http://pandorahearts.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline | http://pandorahearts.wikia.com/wiki/Gilbert_Nightray

□ Personality: Gilbert was, as a young boy, a crybaby who worried and fretted about anything and everything, although particularly about his young master Oz. He acted very innocent-minded and emotional and fussed a lot, for the sake of what he thought was best for Oz.

After Oz disappeared for ten years… Gilbert seemed to change greatly. Part of it was, perhaps, simply growing up. He was no longer the innocent young boy who had lost his memories of the years before, but a young man dedicated to saving his master from the Abyss. He became dedicated and focused, and was tugged upon by no small amount of guilt. In that time he had done things he was less than proud of; sullying his hands for his master’s sake and for the sake of his own causes. Gilbert is fiercely loyal and greatly devoted - first-most to his master but also to his friends.

Looking at him, a lot of people see him first as someone who is very “cool”. Calm, collected… even ‘tall, dark, and handsome’. The truth is that he may seem that way - and even tries to keep up that image to some extent. But if one spends any decent amount of time with him it’s likely that they’ll see that… he’s not as cool or collected as he may look at first glance. Generally those who see him as the handsome, suave type are ones who don’t know him inside because his personality is a fierce and erratic one. His first and greatest goal is to protect his master Oz, to a level that he often receives words of advice relating to the way he seems to obsess over him. He can at times seem single-minded; unable to consider things from a broader angle due to being so focused on a single thing. It’s sometimes very hard for him to step back and look at the bigger picture.

His relationship with his master is shaped a lot throughout the history of the series. Oz became his master when he was only a young boy and immediately protected him and gave him a sense of a home - someplace that Gilbert belonged. And that became very important to him, though he constantly tried to defer his master from calling him a friend. What he wanted was to be needed by someone, when really… part of him needed to be needed. His memory loss left him a somewhat blank slate early on. When he lost Oz to the Abyss, he became whole-heartedly determined to rescue him at any cost and was willing to use others if they could help him get Oz back.

He used his blood brother, Vincent, who had been searching for him. He was given a place in the Nightray family and was able to contract Raven because of it. But in turn, he didn’t remember Vincent at all, and was more interested in what the Nightray family could do for his cause then actually reuniting with the brother that loved him so much. Oz accepting him back as his servant after he returned from the Abyss relieved so many of Gilbert’s fears - those that thought he might not be accepted now that he was a son of Nightray and so different from the boy Oz remembered last. Gilbert considers what other people think of him, and if they are important to him, he considers them a lot. He doesn’t like the idea of being rejected or losing anyone important to him. And while his personal image isn’t something he works at very hard, he does still try to keep up appearances to a certain extent, despite failing miserably at it at times, due to his emotional nature.

It’s not difficult to get him riled up to the point of yelling and bickering if you argue with him or provoke him. Dumb nicknames are a sure way to spark an argument. Granted there is a wide range of difference between real rage and the anger and annoyance he shows over dumber things.

While his natural disposition is a good one - being someone who dislikes to needlessly hurt people physically or emotionally and generally being kind-natured, he is also capable of being rather cruel when the situation calls for it. If it’s important, he’s willing to use people to achieve different ends, not unlike what he did with his younger brother.

At heart, Gilbert is a kind person who wants nothing more than to protect and be with the people he cares about most. Part of him may feel obligated when it comes to certain people, however, he shows great care in taking care of the people he cares about, whether that means stepping in and protecting them himself or telling them that they’re being stupid or reckless in matters and scolding them over situations where they put themselves in greater danger.

And where he may sometimes feel obligated to take care of some people… there is another part of him that fears he may not be needed and longs to feel needed in turn.

He’s deathly afraid of cats. When introduced to cats his reaction is to scream in a manner that isn’t masculine at all and flail pitifully. This is one thing that hasn’t changed at all from his youth. He is also an emotional drunk who tends to get rather weepy. In a short comic he makes a comment to Vincent that Miss Ada scolded him once and he thought she was kinda cute when she did, exposing his more masochistic side as well.

Some tend to underestimate him and when they see certain traits in him, see someone who is ‘useless’. But despite his blunders and the more emotional side of his personality, he is actually quite capable in serious situations and pushes himself hard to make whatever needs to happen… happen. His ability with a gun as well as his contract with Raven make him someone who shouldn’t be easily underestimated. Because he has experience in using both and under dire circumstances, is not afraid to use either. Despite his guilt, he has a high tolerance for it and seems willing to continue to accept more and more guilt upon himself if he has to.

□ Age: 25
□ Gender: Male
□ Appearance:
□ Abilities/Powers: Gilbert himself is human, though he’s contracted to something known as a Chain - a monster from the alternate dimension known as the Abyss. His Chain’s name is Raven - and belonged specifically to the Nightray family before he made his contract with it. Its powers aren’t fully revealed as Gilbert doesn’t use Raven for much other than one primary ability for most of the series. And that ability is its ability to seal and suppress the powers and abilities of the Bloody Black Rabbit. As a Chain, it would also be capable of fighting humans and other Chains, however Gilbert never uses it as such. Raven is also capable of teleportation, however - as is the case with any great powers displayed by Chains - the greater the ability, the greater the toll it takes upon its contractor. That said, he would only use it for the sake of emergencies, seeing as it could also be seen as a disadvantage if he used it when it wasn't absolutely necessary, as he would then be weakened afterwards.

It also bears noting that as a Baskerville, Gilbert, like Vincent, is capable of surviving and healing things that normal people can't.

Gilbert is a very self-sufficient person. He’s capable of all the basics - cooking, cleaning, and supporting himself, as he chose to live outside of the Nightray manor at an early age.

He’s an excellent marksman, who’s talented and quick with a gun. He has experience with dangerous situations and knows how to handle himself in a fight with dignity. He’s fast and rather fit, despite his addiction to cigarettes, and shows little symptoms that that bad habit has become a problem for him.

□ Personal Items: His hat, coat, hand gun, a picture, his carcere (or blood seal mirror - a pendant on a chain), and various cooking books.

□ First Person Sample: [ The voice that addresses Ariel sounds… tired. And not without a fair amount of confusion mixed in. ]

So if I… think about it… I can… communicate with others?

…this is stupid. It feels like I’m just talking to myself…

If anyone can hear this I’d like to hear from them… you… whatever. [ It’s clear he’s not quite sure how to properly address people on here yet. He’s still shaken, and not thinking it over too thoroughly before speaking. ] I’ve heard what the guy had to say about my being here in this city. But I’d like to hear it from someone else. There are… also a lot of other questions I have about things he didn’t talk about…

I guess I want to know what comes next.

□ Third Person Sample: His mind feels a million miles away from his body - if he wiggled his fingers now, would he feel them? Why is he even thinking about it?

Because his body feels heavy and his mind is spinning rapidly trying to work through the haze. It’s similar to the feeling of one who has overslept far too long, until the body wants only to continue in its slumber. For Gilbert, that’s not a very familiar feeling. It’s one he fights, because he likes being aware. He doesn’t like sleeping heavily - he likes being ready to react at a moment’s notice. He likes being alert and aware. But he doesn’t feel like any of those things right now, and that’s what worries him the most first… because his thoughts haven’t caught up enough to realize that there’s more wrong than just that.

When his eyes force themselves open and then wince almost immediately at being forced so, and the brightness of the room around him. He blinks repeatedly, and bit by bit, images flood into his brain, reminding him of the horrors he’d not yet noticed he’d left behind them.

There’s one thing… you should watch out for. Vincent Nightray is probably… in league with the Baskervilles.

He had to wrench a gun out of Vincent’s hands… and Oz and Alice and the Baskervilles were…

And the smell of blood… coming from Elliot’s dead body…

That snaps him out of it, and he blinks one last time, pushing away the memories and forcing himself into the present - looking at last at the room around him. The memories had already returned him to a frantic, near panicked state. The unfamiliar room around him was doing nothing to calm that. Rather, it was only making him panic more.

It only irritates him more that the man in the room seems so calm, whistling and sorting through his papers. Their exchange is mostly shouting on Gilbert’s part for the better part of twenty minutes. He refuses to settle for the straight answers he’s given, knuckles turning white from the tension he exerts as he grips the desk in front of him.

But even he can only keep it up so long. Eventually he has to realize that there’s some manner of truth to what he’s being told. He refuses to accept it all, but at least manages to calm himself down enough to listen to the full spiel, taking in what information he can bring himself to accept and settling to investigate the rest. The worst of this being the idea that there’s some kind of weird thing in his head doing god knows what.

But he was told that it can supposedly help him communicate with others. As ridiculous as that sounds, he’d take anyone over this guy by the time the exhausting conversation is over.
